Default, Inherited, and Explicit Permissions

Overview

There are three ways that permissions can be granted or revoked for a user or group. They can be set by
default, inherited from a higher level in the AnswerHub Hierarchy, or explicitly granted.

Information

Default permissions

Default permissions are self-explanatory; these are the permissions that are given to a group with the AnswerHub platform’s out-of-the-box settings. Understanding the differences between inherited and explicit permissions, especially how they resolve if they are in conflict, is vital to understanding how useful the AnswerHub Hierarchy can be.

Inherited permissions

Inherited permissions are automatically granted to, or revoked from, a user or group based on their relative position in the AnswerHub Hierarchy. When permissions are granted to a user or group at any container level, the same permissions are granted at each level nested within that container. These automatically assigned permissions are referred to as inherited on the AnswerHub platform.

For example:

If a site administrator grants Moderator permissions to the ModMax group at the site level, then ModMax users would automatically be granted the same Moderator permissions in every space nested within that site.

If the site administrator only wants the ModMax group to have Moderator permissions within the Thunderdome space, and not beyond it, then they would need to grant that permission in the Thunderdome space instead of at the site level. They would also need to be sure to revoke Moderator permissions at the site level.

Explicit permissions

Explicit permissions are manually granted, or revoked, for a specific space directly by an administrator.
These permissions will overrule any conflicting inherited permissions at the space level in which they are
granted or revoked.

For Example:

If a site administrator has granted Moderator permissions to the ModMax group at the site level but decides that they should not be able to moderate the community in the Thunderdome space, the administrator can explicitly revoke the Moderator permissions for that space.

The ModMax group would still inherit full Moderator permissions everywhere else on
the site but they would be overridden by the explicitly revoked Moderator permission within
the Thunderdome space (as well as any sub-spaces within it).
